Salomon Frausto (ed.) The Berlage Survey of the Culture, Education, and Practice of Architecture and Urbanism Design: Karel Martens and Werkplaats Typografie, Illustrated (colour and b/w ), Paperback, 544 pages, Format: 17 x 24 cm In association with the Berlage Institute Presentation and Symposium 1 October 2011
Within four prepositional sections, contributions, derived both from the archive and contemporary commissions, are arranged in chronological order. This arrangement, which comes to represent the evolution of architecture culture and discourse, also functions as an informal history of the Institute, documenting the theoretical trends that have developed across the Berlage’s existence. The book also includes a more formal history, in the form of an illustrated chronology, which highlights select moments in the Institute’s research and public programs. These contributionsboth unearthed from the Berlage’s rich archive and newly commissioned for this publicationare divided into four sections, labeled ‘about’, ‘around’, ‘within’, and ‘from’ and are categorized according to their relationship with the Berlage. ’About’ includes texts specifically about the place and functions as a traditional history of its evolution. ‘Around’ consists of ideas and contexts that have made the Berlage possible and surveys the environmentboth pedagogical and architecturalthat surrounds it. “Within” is composed of work produced within the Berlage’s walls, of the research, design, and investigation that lend the place its characteristic vitality. And finally, ’From’ compiles a selection of texts that result from Berlage programs and initiatives and are paradigmatic of the Institute’s function as an intellectual and cultural platform. The book offers an exciting collection of contributions by leading figures in architecture, landscape, and urbanism, and prominent educators, architects, and historians. Contributors include, in alphabetical order: Stan Allen, Wiel Arets, George Baird, Stefano Boeri, Raoul Bunschoten, Kees Christiaanse, Jean-Louis Cohen, Teddy Cruz, Hedy d’Ancona, Lieven De Cauter, Marina de Vries, Fernando de Mello Franco, Abram de Swaan, Rients Dijkstra, Rob Docter, Salomon Frausto, Kenneth Frampton, Adriaan Geuze, Zaha Hadid, Herman Hertzberger, Hilde Heynen, Rem Koolhaas, Phyllis Lambert, Sylvia Lavin, Lars Lerup, Dieter Lesage, Mark Linder, Bart Lootsma, Winy Maas, Branimir Medic, Vedran Mimica, David Mohney, Antonio Negri, Joan Ockman, Juhani Pallasmaa, Pero Puljiz, Edi Rama, Miguel Robles-Durán, Richard Sennett, Aryan Sikkema, Yorgos Simeoforidis, Roemer van Toorn, lejandro Zaera-Polo, Elia Zenghelis, Peter Zumthor.
