This publication presents Japanese architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in the social and cultural context of present-day Japan. Rather than presenting them as autonomous entities, the relationship between architectural and urban projects and their direct and indirect surroundings will be strongly emphasized. In the last decade, building activity in the metropolitan area has declined and a relatively large number of projects have been commissioned by the local governments in provincial regions. In view of this development and the increasing attention given to environmental issues in general, the significance of architecture towards the environment will become one of the most essential themes of architecture in the 21st century. The book will include extensive documentation on more than eighty projects from different generations of leading Japanese architects over the last ten years, such as Tadao Ando, Jun Aoki, Atelier Wow, Shigeru Ban, C+A, F.O.B.A., Itsuko Hasegawa, Toyo Ito, Ryue Nishizawa, Kazuyo Sejima, Jun Tamaki, Riken Yamamoto and many others.
