This publication presents Japanese architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in the social and cultural context of present-day Japan. Rather than presenting them as autonomous entities, the relationship between architectural and urban projects and their direct and indirect surroundings will be strongly emphasized. In the last decade, building activity in the metropolitan area has declined and a relatively large number of projects have been commissioned by the local governments in provincial regions. In view of this development and the increasing attention given to environmental issues in general, the significance of architecture towards the environment will become one of the most essential themes of architecture in the 21st century.
