W.N. RoseThis book is the first monograph on the life and work of the 19th-century Town Architect to Rotterdam and Government Architect, Willem Nicolaas Rose (1801-1877). Rose is rated one of the major Dutch architects of the recent Dutch history along with the likes of H.P. Berlage and P.J.H. Cuypers. In 1839 he was appointed Town Architect to Rotterdam and from 1858 to 1867 held the office of Government Architect in The Hague.

As a designer, writer of countless articles and books and as a leading theorist Rose occupied an important position in the 19th-century fraternity of architects and engineers. This well-documented and lavishly illustrated book is rooted in a thorough investigation of the relevant archives as well as a wealth of source material hitherto untapped, including letters and reports that could be regarded as Rose's memoirs.
