Scenario is a retrospective of the work of visual artist and filmmaker Fiona Tan (b. Indonesia, 1966). Fiona Tan has produced a concentrated oeuvre of film and video installations in which she explores current artistic and social questions, such as the present-day interaction with images, the recycling of historical visual material (found footage), and problems concerning cultural identity and migration. In 1997, Tan's film May You Live in Interesting Times was awarded the prize for best Dutch debut at the Netherlands Film Festival. The book is constructed as a scenario: a storyboard that evokes its own story but also offers a glimpse of as yet unrealized plans and dreams. The book is an enthralling mixture of Tan's work with 'found' photographs and images, and that with personal and specially tailored writing about her work. This conjures up a particular atmosphere and depiction that provides insight into the artist's intentions and frame of reference, and this affords the opportunity to reflect on storytelling in a more general sense.
Scenario includes correspondence between John Berger and Fiona Tan, a conversation between the artist and filmmaker Heddy Honigmann, a story written especially for the book by Oscar van den Boogaard, and essays by Lynne Cooke and Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen.
