The paintings of Vincent van Gogh are as relevant as ever, and his work is sure to have a profound influence on many future generations of artists. Gogh Modern: Vincent van Gogh and contemporary art attempts to explain how this is possible and presents an overview of major post war artists whose work displays a relationship with Van Gogh or whose work it would be hard to imagine without Van Gogh having gone before them. In the paintings by Baselitz, de Kooning, Kiefer and Zandvliet we can clearly recognize the methodologies and expressiveness of Van Gogh. Artists such as Rainer, Schwarzkogler and Nauman have, like Van Gogh, steered art in a new direction and were similarly uncompromising in their work. The book is subdivided according to the following themes: Gesture, Colour, Man and Nature. Each thematic section presents a short introduction and illustrative material, making it possible to compare and contrast Van Gogh and his modern-day colleagues. The publication includes a lively discussion among the authors as well as interviews with the artists, thus offering the reader a range of insights into the enduring influence of Van Gogh. This confrontation between Van Gogh and his successors puts notions such as tradition versus innovation and influence and inspiration in an entirely new perspective.
