NAi Publishers in cooperation with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Imagine you are standing here in front of meUntil 2 February 2003, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is exhibiting a large selection of works from the Caldic Collectie. This sizeable private collection from Joop van Caldenborgh is very wide-ranging and offers plenty of opportunities to exemplify the kaleidoscopic and wilful choices made by this collector. This offers an ideal opportunity for Museum Boijmans to take a closer look at the concept of 'collecting': how does a museum build up its own collection and how does this compare to the choices and the eventual content of a private collection like the Caldic.

The book Imagine you are standing here in front of me presents an attractive, generously illustrated overview of the Caldic Collectie, as well as taking a more in-depth look at the notion of collecting. The philosopher/art theorist Boris Groys (Professor for Philosophy and Media Theory at the Academy for Design, Karlsruhe, among other academic posts) writes an essay about the artwork-artist-collector relationship. The Dutch art critic Sven Lütticken (who writes for De Witte Raaf and other publications) takes a closer look at a selection of artworks from the collection. Jannet de Goede, curator of the Caldic Collectie, traces its history and background.
