In association with Rotterdam Art Publications Foundation (Stichting Kunstpublicaties Rotterdam), and with the support of the G.Ph. Verhagen Foundation.

This book offers a rich and varied insight into the city of Rotterdam in the period 1918-1940. Themes such as cultural life in the city, among the cultural and social elite as well as the average 'Rotterdammers', are examined in nine individual essays. The subjects are linked to specific locations in the city, and include theatre, cabaret, music hall, film and Rotterdam's theatres, nightlife, art societies and artists' groups, exhibitions and fairs, music venues and musicians, architecture and urban planning, and journalistic circles and city newspapers.

The book also includes about one hundred biographies of leading figures from the period: artists, musicians, writers, poets, journalists, architects, designers, actors, cabaret artists, theatre directors, patrons of the arts, and other cultural trendsetters.

The book includes full-page, full-colour illustrations of about one hundred unique historical objects and documents that will also be displayed at the exhibition.

Exhibition in the Las Palmas warehouse, Rotterdam from 18 August till 2 December 2001
