PRIXDEROME.NL 2009The Prix de Rome, which was instituted two hundred years ago by Louis Napoleon and accommodated in the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 1870, is the Dutch art and architecture award for artists under the age of 35. Its purpose is to trace talent and to pinpoint trends in an international context.
Previous Prix de Rome laureates include Jan Sluijters (1904), Joep van Lieshout (1992), Alicia Framis (1997) and Viviane Sassen (2007).

An international, independent jury of experts, chaired by Kestutis Kuizinas, long-listed ten artists for the PRIXDEROME.NL 2009: Maze de Boer (b. 1976, the Netherlands), Rosella Biscotti (1978, Italy), Nicoline van Harskamp (1975, the Netherlands), Rob Hornstra (1975, the Netherlands), Heidi Linck (1978, the Netherlands), Ólafur Ólafsson (1973, Iceland) with Libia Castro (1969, Spain), Marc Oosting (1976, the Netherlands)m Sara Rajaei (1976, Iran), Helmut Smits (1974, the Netherlands) and Jasmijn Visser (1983, the Netherlands).

The four finalists, Rosella Biscotti, Nicoline van Harskamp, Ólafur Ólafsson and Libia Castro and Sara Rajaei created new work that is presented in exhibitions at Witte de With and de Appel. The winner will be chosen from these four artists and will be announced on May 28.

The publication PRIXDEROME.NL presents individual portraits of ten young and talented artists, with particular attention to the four finalists.
The intense selection process for the bicentenary of the PRIXDEROME.NL 2009 is followed step by step by Moosje Goosen, nominated for the Prize for Young Art Criticism 2008.
