Nicoline Timmer, a nominee for the Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism 2010, is contributing an introductory essay and has followed the intense selection process closely. By awarding the assignment for an essay to a young art critic, the Prix de Rome is also underscoring the importance of encouraging a new generation of art critics and thus continuing the cooperation with the prize for art criticism. The Prix de Rome is the most important Dutch art and architecture prize for artists and architects under 35 years of age. The Prix de Rome Visual Arts is awarded every two years and aims to discover talent and signal trends in an international context. Also available |

The Prix de Rome 2011 publication presents individual portraits of ten talented young artists who are participating in the Prix de Rome 2011, with special consideration for the four finalists. All the artists are age 35 years or under and were selected by an independent jury of international professionals, comprised of the visual artists Sung Hwan Kim, Wendelien van Oldenborgh, Silke Otto-Knapp, Pedro Cabrita Reis and curator and author Adam Szymczyk. The shortlisted artists are Gwenneth Boelens, Mark Boulos, Priscila Fernandes, Ben Pointecker, Petra Stavast, Pilvi Takala, Edward Clydesdale Thomson, Vincent Vulsma, Guido van der Werve and Katarina Zdjelar. Previous laureates include artists – then still relatively unknown – such as Jan Sluijters (1904), Joep van Lieshout (1992), Alicia Framis (1997), Viviane Sassen (2007) and Nicoline van Harskamp (2009).
